Volunteer Finance Assistant

Job Description

Since 2009, Learn English Together in Merton has been providing free English lessons to adults living in and around the London borough of Merton in their own homes or in group classes which follow the ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) curriculum. We are a small independent charity, and we are now seeking a Finance Assistant / Bookkeeper who will play a crucial role in ensuring accurate financial records and efficient financial management, enabling Learn English Together in Merton to effectively carry out its mission and support its services.

 

What will you be doing?

The Finance Assistant/ Bookkeeper will:

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records.
  • Prepare and review financial reports, statements, and budgets on a regular basis.
  • Ensure compliance with accounting principles, regulations, and internal financial policies.
  • Manage the accounts payable process, including verifying invoices, obtaining necessary approvals, and processing payments in a timely manner.
  • Monitor and manage timely invoicing and collections.
  • Provide support to the Treasurer in budget tracking and expense monitoring to ensure financial targets are met.
  • Process financial transactions.
  • Maintain proper documentation of financial transactions, ensuring accuracy and compliance with internal policies and legal requirements.
  • Assist in the preparation of financial documents for funding applications and reports and for audits and other reviews.
  • Assist the Treasurer in the preparation of financial presentations and reports for management and board meetings.

What are we looking for?

  • Experience in finance, bookkeeping, or accounting roles, preferably in the non-profit sector.
  • Strong understanding of financial principles, budgeting, and accounting practices.
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in financial recordkeeping.
  • Effective communication skills, with the ability to present financial information clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritise tasks, and meet deadlines.

The work can be done from home and we estimate a time commitment of 2 hours per week and approximately 5-6 hours extra at the month end for salaries and management accounts .
