Dons Local Action Group: Supporting Families This Wimbledon Fortnight

As Wimbledon captures the world’s attention, local charity Dons Local Action (DLAG) turns its attention to supporting children and families in our own community who are facing the harsh reality of hardship and poverty.

This Wimbledon Fortnight, Dons Local Action Group has launched an initiative to collect school uniform and sports kit to support families across South West London.

With the cost of living biting hard, basic essentials like uniform and sports kit are becoming unaffordable for many. Dons are asking the community to donate:

Good-quality, unbranded, clean school uniform.

Clean, good-condition sports kit and accessories (boots, rackets, bats, shin pads, etc).

Drop-off points include:

  • DLAG food collection points.
  • The DLAG Hub: 8 Waterside Way, SW17 0HB
  • The Wimbledon Sporting Heritage Exhibition at Wimbledon Quarter.

Please encourage donations through your school WhatsApp group, workplace, or with neighbours. A small collection can make a huge difference.

Uniform donations will be distributed through DLAG’s DLAG in Uniform project.

Sports kit donations will be distributed in partnership with Sport Local Action’s Sports Bank, which works to remove financial barriers to sport for young people.

We believe no child should feel left out – whether on the pitch or in the classroom.

This is a chance for South West London to pull together and serve up something that really matters: HOPE.

End of the school summer term is a great way to sort through old uniform and sports kits and donate but if you miss out on donating in the next fortnight, there are still other ways to donate:

Donate any school logo or school-specific kit to school or PTA – they will run regular second-hand uniform sales with any money going back to the school or will give to those in need at school.

Unbranded uniform and sports kits can be regularly donated throughout the year at any DLAG Foodbank drop-off point.

Sutton Community Champions often runs freecycle events – operating out of Riverside Community centre on the Wandle and supporting Merton as well as Sutton families.

There’s also a Facebook group for Merton and Sutton called Uniform Swap Shop where you can post items.

Howden insurance on Wimbledon High Street accepts donations of rugby and football boots too, and sports clubs like Old Ruts often welcome donations to pass on to local families.
