Carter House Care Home in Raynes Park was delighted to celebrate resident Julie’s 100th birthday on Wednesday 1st July. Marking this incredible milestone, the home welcomed the Mayor of Merton, Councillor Shuile Syeda, who joined Julie, her close family, fellow residents, staff and visitors for a memorable celebration. Surrounded by flowers, a special birthday cake and countless well wishes, Julie enjoyed a wonderful day celebrating her centenary.

Julies Life Story

Born in London on Thursday 1st July 1926, Julie grew up in Richmond upon Thames and experienced the challenges of the Second World War from a young age. After the war, her adventurous spirit took her around the world, working as a veterinary nurse in Canada, a nurse in Kenya and later as a film location scout in Italy, where she met many famous stars of the era.

Returning to Britain, Julie married Geoffrey Thorns and became part of the family business before pursuing the career she loved most – nursing. She spent many years caring for vulnerable newborn babies in Special Care Baby Units across London, including Queen Mary’s, Queen Charlotte’s, Roehampton and Kingston Hospitals. During her career, she also cared for the famous Hanson Quintuplets, with one baby being named after her in recognition of her dedication.

Away from work, Julie raised her son Denis as a single mother while continuing her nursing career. In retirement she continued to embrace life, travelling extensively across the world, while enjoying her passions for gardening, animals and spending time with her family. Despite her travels, Richmond and the surrounding area always remained close to her heart.

Senior Customer Relations Manager Alex Ulatowska commented:

“Julie has lived an extraordinary life and it has been a privilege to celebrate this very special birthday with her. Her kindness, resilience and sense of adventure are truly inspiring, and everyone at Carter House wishes her a wonderful 100th birthday.”
