New Residents’ Association for Cannon Hill Ward, Morden

Get involved, have your say.

A group of residents in Cannon Hill ward, Morden, have set up a residents association and are inviting others to join.

The new association aims to give local people a stronger voice in determining the way the local area develops, to push for action on issues that matter to local people, and to develop a stronger sense of community in the area.

The new residents association is the latest in a patchwork of such organisations that have developed in Merton over many years. They range from ward-level groups such as the Raynes Park and West Barnes Residents’ Association, and the Merton Park Ward Residents’ Association, to smaller residents groups that cover a handful of streets or a particular housing estate.

The growth of social media, particularly those focused on local areas such as Nextdoor, have encouraged the growth of such groups and made it easier to organise and run them.

A group of 15 local residents had been planning the launch of the Cannon Hill Ward Residents’ Association for 3 months before the launch, and have asked local residents to formally approve the creation of the residents association, to adopt a constitution, and elect the initial officers and committee who will run the new body.

The area served by the new body, Cannon Hill Ward, covers all the streets between Hillcross Avenue in the south and Kingston Road in the north, including all the roads around Hillcross Primary School, Joseph Hood Primary School and Cannon Hill Common.

The residents association aims to keep local people informed about developments such as new planning permission applications in the area, local events planned and other matters of concern, via a website and newsletter. It also plans to ask local residents what improvements they would like to see in the area, and then work to help get these changes implemented.
