As part of the Mayor of London’s Community Weekend, we will be hosting an exciting family picnic around the iconic Wimbledon Windmill on Sunday afternoon, 25th June. The core themes will be:
• Engaging with our diverse local communities
• The importance of flour and baking in creating healthy food across our world
• The spirit of sharing
• Exploring the 200-year-old windmill
• Family fun
We are inviting everyone, wherever you live, to come along for our Pop-Up Picnic and, if you can, to bring a little extra bread, cake or other bakery item that proudly represents traditional food in your community. There will be sharing tables where you can both leave the things you would love others to taste and also try some new delights offered by your neighbours.
To entertain everyone and make the afternoon truly memorable we have lined up something really special, including:
• Continuous outdoor demonstration of nutritious, international flatbread cookery by the renowned “Community Chef”, featuring recipes from Senegal, South Africa and the Levant
• A chocolate fountain and sugar spin for the young at heart
• Conducted tours of the Windmill Museum led by the millers who lived in it some two centuries ago
• Handicraft workshop
• Outdoor games
• “Family litter pick” – led, of course, by a Womble!
The whole event is completely free so please come to enjoy the early summer sun with us and share the fun with some new friends.
