Worple Art Group exhibition at St Marks Church, Wimbledon

On Saturday 11th May, you can join the Worple Art Group at St Mark’s Church in Wimbledon for their May 2019 Spring exhibition. Last year, Jackie Chapman attended the Spring Exhibition and reiterated how fantastic it was to live in a place teeming with creativity and to be able to talk to the artists in a relaxed setting. Click here for the full review and an insight into what to expect this year.

The Worple Art Group exhibits twice annually, in spring and autumn. On display and for sale are original works, normally about 200 paintings and drawings, by the 20 members of the group and invited guest artists. The group was formed in 1983 and as vacancies occur the membership is maintained by invitation to artists living in Wimbledon area, who have made themselves known to the group. These may be established artists or talented artists with the potential to become recognised through exhibiting their work regularly. This year’s Spring exhibition will also include three new guest artists: David Melrose, Kevin Williams and Lorna Nimmo.

Whether you’re interested in art produced by local people or art in general, the Worple Art Group Exhibitions are a great way to liaise with local people and continue to celebrate the many talents of people within our wonderful Merton community.

She Stoops to Conquer, Carlton Theatre, New Wimbledon Theatre

Wimbledon’s oldest amateur theatre group, Carlton, is excited to present Oliver Goldsmith’s renowned 18th Century comedy She Stoops to Conquer directed by Patrick Briône.

In the play, Charles Marlow has been invited to visit the Hardcastles’ country home in order to consider engagement to Mr Hardcastle’s daughter Kate.

On the way, however, Marlow and his companion Hastings are waylaid by Kate’s step-brother Tony, a practical joker who convinces them that the Hardcastle house is, in fact, a country inn where they will need to spend the night before continuing on their journey.

Confusion reigns as Marlow takes Mr Hardcastle for a presumptuous innkeeper and Kate for the local barmaid, an error she happily plays along with to trick him into discarding his shy and formal public demeanour and revealing the rogue beneath.

Kate’s cousin Constance, meanwhile, plots to elope with Hastings but first needs to steal her jewels out from under the nose of her controlling aunt, Mrs Hardcastle. Will the mistakes of a night be uncovered before it’s too late?

Often described as a laugh-packed comedy of very English manners and mistakes, this comedy is bound to keep you smiling from Tuesday 14th May at the New Wimbledon Theatre. Click here for tickets and more information.
