There are times when I think to myself, how fantastic it is to live in a place which is absolutely teeming with creativity. This weekend was just such a time. I happened to go along to the Art Exhibition at St Marks Church (one of the venues promoted on Wimblecomm), this Saturday 21st April. The church is located just between the Library and the Alexandra pub.So, it was very local and, also free entrance.
What a feast for the senses – so many diverse styles of painting, all by local artists, and all for sale from prices as low as £20 up to a more substantial £850.
The exhibition was organised by The Worple Art Group, which was formed in 1983. The group invites membership to artists living in the Wimbledon area. Many of the artists were there to discuss their works with attendees. How nice it was to be able to talk with them in a relaxed setting.
There were over two hundred paintings throughout the church; on display in the Entrance, the Church, the Chapel and the Chapter Room. The setting was perfect to show off all the paintings – large spaces and fantastic light. There was a wide variety in the exhibition, including still lifes, modern art, landscapes and animal portraits. Truly something for everyone. And what imaginative use of community space.
This was a great way of obtaining a piece of original art, made very special by the direct interaction between the artists and the public. It is also an opportunity for art lovers to easily connect with local artists, a thoroughly enjoyable experience. The piece I bought was literally from someone down my street.
Their next exhibition will be at the same venue over the weekend of 12/13 October 2018.
