August was a vibrant month for our community, and the team behind Wimblecomm was delighted to be part of two special events that highlight the richness and diversity of life in Merton.
Heritage Discovery Day

On Saturday 16th August, we took part in the Heritage Discovery Day at Morden Civic Centre. We hosted a display stand at Morden Library, sharing what we do with visitors. Our Chair, David Hall (pictured here on the right), delivered a talk on the history of WCA and the evolution of Wimblecomm to an engaged audience in the Merton Council Chamber. It was inspiring to see so much interest in our borough’s heritage and how the past continues to shape our shared sense of community today. It was also a pleasure to be amongst other community groups including The Dons Local Action Group (DLAG), Merton Priory Trust, Making Merton, Salvation Army Wimbledon, Mitcham Camera Club, Merton Historical Society, Wimbledon Common Windmill Museum and Sustainable Merton, many of whom you will find featured on our WEBSITE. We even got to meet a Womble!

Merton Pride
Two weeks later, on Saturday 30th August, we joined the afternoon celebrations at Merton Pride held at Merton Abbey Mills. The photographs show what a well-attended and vibrant event it was – full of colour, music, and inclusivity. Huge credit goes to Merton Plus, Love Wimbledon and Merton Council, with support from a number of local businesses, for creating such a memorable day – the first of what will hopefully become an annual event. The crowds were treated to a brilliantly compered event filled with music & dancing, and there was even a wedding party amongst the guests!

Both events reminded us how important it is to nurture spaces where heritage and identity can be expressed freely, and where community spirit thrives. A huge thank you to the organisers, volunteers, and everyone who came along to make these days such a success.
We look forward to more opportunities to connect, celebrate, and build community together. Speaking of which, don’t forget to check the What’s On pages of Wimblecomm for the latest events and activities, and browse community groups that are open to join. Whatever you’re looking for, you can be sure that Wimblecomm features something for you!
